African Animal Princess...Commission piece

Well there is a dedicated artist out there, Ben Hennessy, who lives and goes to school in Ireland w/his gf Nichola Kehoe, who is also an artist...Anyway, Ben is also a fan of mine whom I had the pleasure to meet @San Diego Con 2 years ago..Well he came back this year...and while he was busy @ another table his gf snuck over and commissioned me to do one of my "animal with a girl" pieces... It would be a surprise for his bday....She said I could do anything I want....any topic etc... well could I ask for a better commission...such freedom.
Anyway, this is what I did for him and he got the original drawing plus a high end print(digital color) sent to him in Ireland, Nichola had it framed for his bday and from what I heard he was quite surprised and pleased...

So here is the piece I did.....I hope ya'll enjoy as much as he did.....it was a real pleasure doing something for such a kind person as he.....Brilliant he says....

sharpening the chops

Here are some recvent figure sketches done w/a ballpoint pen. I always try to switch up my materials which then helps me discover new approaches to a subject I have practiced for years.....one in which I always need practice with. These sketches were anywhere from 3-5 min sketches...found myself beginning to design the figure in this session.
The model had a figure reminiscent of Frazetta's work.....so on one page I found myself replacing the stool for a stylized wild cat.....stimulated my imagination and helped make the sketches a little more interesting...

for a fan.....

A fan of mine contacted me through my deviant art account and asked me to do a sketch of one of his characters for his comic. He lives in Bulgaria I believe....The character description was a little ambiguous....a batboy who dresses up as a human, but cant fly,has a tablecloth for a cape....wears a mask like V.....it went on and on.... so this is what I came up with after doing it as a morning warmup sketch. All in all he was quite pleased with it........needless to say I had some temporary satisfaction w/it too.

Well, duh duh duhhhhhhhhh. What's this....what's this.....is it finally here....can the audience finally explode in excitement and stop holding back the anticipation..
Well, The Art of Animal Character Design w/David Colman is on its way!!! It will be arriving early February. Here is a sneak peek @ the cover.....for those of you who havent seen it.
It will be debuted to the public @ Wondercon 2007 in March. Before then a possible small private art show ...I will keep ya'll posted.
